I am starting off my 2023 learning at a biophysical modelling course at Banyuls-ser-Mer in the south of France. Last week I spent a fantastic 3 days meeting great marine researchers from all over Europe and eating some very nice French pastries!

The course was organised by SEA-UNICORN, a COST Action which aims to bring together a large group of international and interdisciplinary scientists and stakeholders with the goal of advancing knowledge on marine functional connectivity. They run various workshops, training, and symposia on the theme of connectivity in the marine environment.

At the end of 3 days I was able to map a couple of very pretty plots! These maps are showing the possible patterns that a particle can take from being released over the course of 20 days. The model uses hydrodynamic data to calculate the speed of the particle and predict where it will go. This approach can be used to model where things like fish eggs will travel once they have been released.

Thanks SEA-UNICORN, and specifically Working Group 1 and the organisers of the course, for a great few days. I am excited to use my new skills in my Ph.D. project 😊
